PCSO Maiden Trial Results

As part of its original mandate, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office is tasked to support the sport of horseracing, which it fulfills by sponsoring horse races. This illustrates the tie between the PCSO and the horseracing industry, which goes back to the time when winning sweepstakes numbers were determined by which horses won in designated races.

Apart from its premier sponsored races the First Lady or First Gentleman Silver Cup (in honor of the sitting president’s spouse) and the highly prestigious Presidential Gold Cup, the PCSO supports “maiden” races that showcase first-time runners, usually 2YO and 3YO. These used to be the “Sweepstakes races” of yore.

Nowadays, PCSO Special Maiden Races are staged several times a year, and are eagerly anticipated by participants for the generous prize money, and fans for being a showcase of the best up-and-coming runners.

About a month or three weeks before a race, a trial run is made to determine if the horses who wish to enter are qualified. One such trial was held yesterday at the Philippine Racing Club’s Santa Ana Park in Naic, Cavite.

The 1,300-meter trial was won in 1:22 by Emmanuel King’s Hi Money, ridden by Patricio Dilema and carrying 53 kgs. Mayor Sandy Javier’s Yellowguska came in two lengths behind to take second place, while John Joseph Lagasca’s Babe’s Magic placed third and Tarlac congressman Jeci Lapus’s Beyond Good fourth.

Others that participated in the trial were ACS Industrial Farm’s Gold Quest, Honorato Neri’s Don Galo, Mandy Carlo Sanchez’s Belle De Arturo, and Rolando Villardo’s Some Like It Hot.

The PCSO Maiden Race proper will be held on October 31 at Santa Ana Park, with a purse of P300,000 for the winner, P100,000 for second place, and P50,000 for third. To the winning breeder will go a cash prize of P30,000.

The last quarter of the year ushers in the big racing festivals, kicking off the holiday racing season with the Klub Don Juan de Manila Derby. To be held at San Lazaro Leisure Park on October 18-24, this year’s event will be its ninth edition and features the KDJM Juvenile Fillies, KDJM Juvenile Colts, The Don Antonio Floirendo Golden Girls Stakes for female horses, and the highlight Don Juan Derby.
