Constatic, Bosbarawana in Garnet II and III

It just goes to show that horseracing is unpredictable – it’s a pair of longshots in last weekend’s glittering Garnet Stakes!

The Philippine Racing Commission-sponsored Garnet II for filles and Garnet III for colts, both mile races, attracted an exciting lineup of top-class 3YO Philippine-breds at the Manila Jockey Club’s San Lazaro Leisure Park.

In the Garnet II last Saturday, the longest shot of all, Constatic, scored a six-length upset over the field, relegating fellow dark horse Herran to second place. Second choice Immaculate settled for third while favorite Restless Heart came in fourth, followed by Ella Enjoy and Gandang Pinay.

Another drama had formed backstage, with Constatic owner Ronaldo Tan replacing declared jockey AP Peñaflor with a “loss of confidence” form just before the race ran, putting ace veteran Antonio B. Alcasid Jr. on top of his filly. The tandem proved magical and made Constatic’s connections richer by P300,000, the purse for first place.

Constatic is trained by Joel Mijares. The splits for the race were 25-24’-25-29 with a total time 1:43.8, which is about average nowadays for that distance.

In the Garnet III last Sunday, another surprise winner pulled off a shocker by crushing the favorites. Santa Clara Stockfarm’s Bosbarawana, ridden by Val Dilema and trained by Chito Santos, clocked 24’-24’-25’-28 for a total time of 1:42.6, finishing nine lengths ahead of the favorite, Pritil. Second choice Barkley came in third, third pick Whistler fourth, followed by Hi Money, Sulong Pinoy, Prince Isiah, and My Keys coming last.

These elite thoroughbreds are now journeying along the “road to the Triple Crown”, culminating in the grand-tastic Triple Crown series in summer.

The next slew of glass-shattering races will happen in February – the Amethyst stakes series. SLLP will host the Amethyst I – the second leg of the Import/Local Challenge series – on February 13, Sunday, over 1,750 meters. Nomination is on January 25.

The weekend of February 19-20 at the Philippine Racing Club’s Santa Ana Park in Naic, Cavite, will see the running of the Amethyst II (3YO local fillies) and Amethyst III (3YO local colts). Nomination is on February 1. Both are mile races and will feature also feature potential Triple Crown contenders.   ***
