The aptly-named Windbeneathmywings floated effortlessly across the track to clinch the title in today’s Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office’s Special Maiden Race held at Santa Ana Park.
Open to 2YO horses, the race pits newcomers against each other in a test of stamina and speed over 1500 meters. The highly-touted colt Go Air Force of the Esguerra Racing Stable and filly Alisha’s Gold of Ric Aquino were scratched earlier, leaving just four entries to scramble for the prize money provided only for the first to third placers.
Scrappy filly Windbeneathmywings, who won the race’s trial last July 1, broke well out of the gate beside Love You By Heart, considered another strong contender. Rosa’s Success ran a distant third while High Energy, in the rear, failed to fire and live up to his name.

Windbeneathmywings, driven by Pati Dilema, paced just a length off Love You By Heart until the far turn, where she took the lead and left her rivals in the dust, reaching the wire with six lengths to spare. Love You By Heart settled for second, Rosa’s Success third, and High Energy last.
Owned by professional basketball player Paolo Mendoza and trained by his father Rudy Mendoza, Windbeneathmywings was sired by Mr. Sutter out of racemare Baby Lite at Herma Farms and Stud.
Total time for the race was 1:35, with splits of 18-24′-24-28′.
