Spinning Ridge Takes Triple Crown 2nd leg

After a hard-fought battle, Spinning Ridge took the second leg of the Philippine Racing Commission Triple Crown last June 15, coming from behind and narrowly beating Borjkhalifa for the title.

The 1,800-meter race at Santa Ana Park with a full gate of local-bred 3YOs saw Haring Benedict take the lead, followed by Big Leb, Don Albertini, Hot and Spicy, Captain Ball, and Borjkhalifa.

Spinning Ridge, ridden by John Alvin Guce and owned by SC Stockfarm, paced towards the rear of the pack and started moving up at the back stretch, striding past a succession of foes to race one-on-one against Borjkhalifa who had gained the lead by the homestretch.

Boss Jaden placed third, Hot and Spicy fourth.

In the auxiliary 1,800-meter Philracom 3YO Hopeful Stakes that same day, Mandy Sanchez’s Jazz Connection, steered by John Paul Guce, scored an upset over Sharpshooter, who looked like a shoo-in after dominating most of the race by as much as eight lengths.

Sharpshooter settled for second, Santino’s Best rallied from the back to take third, and Big Boy Vito took fourth.

Newly reelected Manila congressman Amado S. Bagatsing and his brother, former Manila congressman lawyer Ramon S. Bagatsing Jr., announced that this year’s edition of the 5th Mayor Ramon D. Bagatsing Memorial Cup will be held August 18 at San Lazaro Leisure Park.

The event is named for their late father, a beloved mayor of the city of Manila.

That same day, which is the day before the late mayor’s birth anniversary, will also feature the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office’s National Grand Derby.

Atty. Bagatsing says their family has arranged with Manila Jockey Club racing manager Ding Magboo for the staging of thirteen races, with four other major races in addition to the PCSO Grand Derby – two sponsored by the PCSO, two by Philracom.

The other races will be backed by corporate sponsors such as Resorts World Manila and Solaire Casino.

Continuing the tradition set during the first Mayor Bagatsing Cup in 2009, cash and prizes in kind will be given to winning grooms.

Grooms (sota) are responsible for providing direct care to horses and contribute in a tangible way to the success – or failure – of a racing stable’s operations. The Bagatsing Cup is one of the few events that show this often unrecognized group of racing workers some well-deserved appreciation.
