Skyway Cops PCSO Race

As expected, Joseph Dyhengco’s fleet filly Skyway took top honors in the September 7 Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office Special Maiden Race at Santa Ana Park.

Mark Alvarez guided Skyway wire-to-wire for an easy three-length win over second placer Tap Dance. Great Care took third and Sweetchildofmine fourth.

Skyway posted a time of 1:12.2 with splits of 25-22’-25 for the 1,200-meter race.

Meanwhile, last September 8, stayer Hot and Spicy overcame the rest of the pack to rule the Japan Racing Association Cup at San Lazaro Leisure Park.

Sky Dragon ran way in front at the start, stretching his lead to about six lengths, and seemed a sure winner until Be Humble and Hot and Spicy rallied from behind.

Be Humble and Hot and Spicy staged an exciting neck-and-neck battle down the stretch and hit the wire almost simultaneously, with the latter declared the winner in a photo-finish decision.

A photo-finish for third was also declared, showing how closely-matched this particular field was.

Hot and Spicy’s time for this mile race was 1:43 with quarters of 24’-24-26-28’.

LOS ANGELES – Each time I’m here for a visit, my thoughts turn to racing in this area. Among the famous racetracks here are Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Del Mar in San Diego County, Hollywood Park which is just three miles from LAX airport, and Los Alamitos in the city of the same name.

I’m most familiar with Santa Anita Park, which I visited a couple of times when Ron Charles was its president. The Autumn Meet of “The Great Race Place” starts on September 27, with six Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup prep stakes races to be held over the first two weekends as horseowners and trainers get their entries ready for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The iconic event will be held November 1 and 2 and will feature 27 graded stakes races including 14 Breeders’ Cup events.

The Breeders’ Cup races, dates, and distances (in miles) are: November 1 – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1, 2YO F—1 M T), Breeders’ Cup Marathon (G2, 3YO and up—1 ¾), Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1, 2YO—1 M T), Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1, 3YO and up—1 M), and the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1, F/M 3YO and up—1 1/8).
