Malaya clobbers foes in PCSO trial

Mandaluyong Mayor Benhur Abalos’s racing stable has been doing well the past few years, on the whole, in the various elite competitions.

The latest to join the honored throng is his filly Malaya, who clocked 1:30 to win a Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office trial race last Friday.

The 1,400-meter trial of nine entries took place at the Manila Jockey Club’s San Lazaro Leisure Park as a qualifier for the PCSO Special Maiden Race for 3YO to be held Mar. 22 also at SLLP.

Malaya, guided by Kelvin Abobo, won by many lengths carrying 53.5 kgs. Second placer Lucky Leonor, owned by Hideaway Farms, carried one kilo more and set a time of 1:32. Robert Joseph Moran’s Alta’s Angel came in third at 1:33 with 53 kgs.

The other arrivals were, in order: Manalig Ka, Think Twice, Pacific Warrior, St. Claire, Princess Ellie, and Black Fury last.

Apart from his enthusiastic engagement in racing and breeding, Abalos is becoming gradually involved once again in industry matters, after taking a break of several years.

Since being made aware of pressing industry issues, he has invited racing personalities to a meeting Friday night to discuss these and find solutions that will benefit and promote the industry.

As a past president of the Metropolitan Association of Race Horse Owners, he spearheaded an anti-illegal bookies campaign that earned him death threats. He presided over the successful MARHO Cup racing festivals during his incumbency and revitalized the organization, which is the oldest horseowners’ group in the country.

His commitment and dedication to racing is proven and undoubted, and we wish him the best of luck in his efforts to bring the various industry sectors together to reach mutual goals.

The Philippine Racing Commission presents two stakes races this weekend at Metro Manila Turf Club’s racecourse in Malvar, Batangas.

The 3YO Local Fillies race is on Saturday. The declared entries are Up and Away, Roman Charm, Winter’s Tale, Bahay Toro, and That Is Mine.

At the 3YO Local Colts race on Sunday, expect to see Kanlaon, Wild Talk, Tan Goal, High Grader, Diamond’s Gold, and River Mist.

Both are mile races and should be good preparation for this summer’s elite races for 3YO such as the Triple Crown. I’m going with Up and Away in the Fillies and Tan Goal in the Colts.

Declared for the Philracom’s Ruby Anniversary Races are, at Santa Ana Park on Mar. 18, Amberdini, Both Kalifa, Sulong Pinoy, Global Warrior, Princess Rock, and Caramel (1,600 meters); at Metro Turf on Mar. 20, Fairy Star, Sweetchildofmine, Yes I Can, Cleave Ridge, and Gonzee’s Song (1.600 meters); and at San Lazaro Leisure Park on Mar. 23, Penrith, Silver Sword, Captain Ball, and Royal Reign (1,500 meters).

Thanks to Philracom Executive Director Jess Cantos for the updates!
