Suggested Heading: Upcoming “Down Under” sales
t’s that time of the year once again for auctions in the Land Down Under, a favorite place for local owners to acquire thoroughbreds at affordable prices. Austrade Business Development Manager Ancy Palma says that both William Inglis & Son Ltd. and Magic Millions are having sales within the coming months and Filipino equine lovers are invited to participate.
“William Inglis & Son Ltd’s Great Southern Sale is the largest thoroughbred sale held in Oaklands, Victoria, Australia,” says Ms. Palma. June 24-25 will see the sales of weanlings, while June 27-28 will showcase an extensive lineup of broodmares, yearlings, and runners. She adds “There will be many opportunities to purchase both quality breeding and racing stock at very inexpensive prices.”
On May 7, Cameron Croucher, CEO of Eliza Park, and Arthur Inglis of William Inglis and Son Ltd will hold at an afternoon presentation at the Manila Polo Club to personally invite horse buyers to attend the Great Southern Sale.
On the part of Magic Millions, Managing Director David Chester visited Manila last April 24 and feted equine industry members at Australian Ambassador Tony Hely’s home in North Forbes Park. Mr. Chester invited all those interested to come to the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions National Sale this coming June, with 2692 horses to be auctioned. Last year, around 40 Filipinos went to the Gold Coast to participate in the sale.
This year’s edition, the 2007 Magic Millions National Weanling, Broodmare, and Yearling Sale, will take place from May 30 to June 14. 803 weanlings will be sold off on May 30 to June 1, 1210 broodmares on June 4-8, and 679 yearlings on June 12-14. Yearlings and weanlings are sired and broodmares covered by sought-after sires such as Anabaa, Choisir, Danasinga, Danzero, Dehere, Elusive Quality, Encosta de Lago, Fusaichi Pegasus, Jet Spur, Rock of Gibraltar, Royal Academy, Stravinsky, Street Cry, Testa Rossa, Zabeel, Zeditave and many more.
The three weeks of the National Sale mixes business and pleasure with a dizzying round of sales, parties, and racing. The National Sale will coincide with key events of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival and will be surrounded by a calendar of equine and horse sport events.
Mr. Chester made a special offer of complimentary accommodation to Filipino clients. To be eligible, clients must either have purchased horses to the value of Aus$10,000 at last year’s sale or purchase Aus$10,000 or more at this year’s sale. Reach David Chester at email@example.com and Ancy Palma at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Australia has long been a destination of choice for many Filipino horse buyers because of affordable purchase and shipping prices, compared to the United States. While local owners and trainers value thoroughbreds with American pedigrees above all as proven performers, they can easily buy horses with the desired lineages in Australia. Since the local breeding industry cannot keep up with the demand and have to sell their produce at a premium, many are looking to importation as the most cost-effective solution for their needs. ***
