The Manila Jockey Club was proud to showcase the 1400-meter “Tumbok Trophy Race”, last May 9 at the San Lazaro Leisure Park in Carmona, Cavite.
The “lucky seven” runners from class-division 4-1A included Sharp Cookie (steered by promising apprentice CB Tamano carrying 54kg); Beaux Yeux (JG Serrano, 54), Krizza’s Magic (EA Ramos, 52), Sun and Wind (RM Telles, 51), Secret Truth (MR Salud, 54), Grand Fiesta (PR Dilema, 56), and Sir Henry (AL Lumagui, 54).
Grand Fiesta, who came off three victories and a second place in the past five outings, and Sir Henry, who won two recent class-division races in a row, were launched as second and third favorites respectively.
However, the heavy handicap weight of 56 kg proved to be Grand Fiesta’s undoing. It was Sir Henry who was in contention until the final stages of the race, but he did not reckon with the strong finishing kick of Sharp Cookie. The mere third favorite, Sharp Cookie came from behind to prevail by a neck, timing 1:29.5.
A commemorative trophy for the winning horseowner, ND Singson, was presented to the winning trainer, Patrick Saulog, by members of Tumbok’s executive staff, among them Ms. Imee Alcantara (VP-Operations), Mr. Roni Briones (Managing Editor), and Ms. Gigi Tejada (Marketing Supervisor).
Tumbok, a tabloid of the Philippine Daily Inquirer Group of Publications, is gearing up to contain more news on horseracing and gaming in the future. ***
