Horseowner Rudy Mendoza once again branded his mark as summer’s hottest trainer when two out of his five entries on the May 27 (Sunday) card at San Lazaro Leisure Park came home winners for the nth time in a row.
They were Gallant Warrior and Tellmenolies, who have been performing consistently as of late and have provided much of the cash flow for the Mendoza Stable.
In Race 4, Gallant Warrior ((h6c), steered by regular rider Edwin Blancaflor, was sent off as the favorite and cruised to his seventh straight win since April, clocking 1:00 2/5 for the 1000-meter sprint.
In Race 11, second-pick Tellmenolies scored an upset over the outstanding favorite Special Edition when the 4-year-old bay mare ran wire-to-wire to notch her fourth consecutive victory and the fifth win out of six most recent outings. Jockey Patty Dilema outmaneuvered other classy contenders such as Golden Connection, Ocean Deep, and Best Kept Secret to win by a wide 7-length margin. Time was 1:26 flat, just a second off the new record set by Wild Orchid the same day.
I met Tatay Rudy Mendoza just after Gallant Warrior’s run, and he was all smiles as he accepted my congratulations. “Sinusuwerte pa rin,” he said humbly, refusing to take any personal credit for the recent successes of his stable, ascribing it all to “teamwork and prayers.”
