Boxing and horseracing – two of the most iconic Philippine sports – combine to bring exciting action to San Lazaro Leisure Park’s (SLLP) twin tracks with the Mabuhay! WBC Speed Week.
The Manila Jockey Club (MJC), in close coordination with the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), and with the assistance of the Philippine Racing Commission (Philracom), has come up with this once-in-a-lifetime event to mark the 45th World Boxing Council (WBC) Convention to be held here in Manila from November 11 to17 at the Manila Hotel.
The Mabuhay! WBC Speed Week at SLLP featured four special races on Thursday and Friday all in honor of four famous Filipino boxers who have brought glory to the country with their achievements – Pancho Villa, Flash Elorde, Rolando Navarrete, and Luisito Espinosa.
On Sunday, November 11, the affair culminates with the main race, the Mabuhay! WBC Cup sponsored by Philracom, with total guaranteed prizes of P500,000, and trophies for the winning owner, trainer, and jockey.
Also to be featured are four secondary races – the WBC President Jose Sulaiman Trophy Race, GAB Chairman Eric Buhain Trophy Race, Atty. Rodrigo Salud Trophy Race, and the Atty. Roberto Reverente Trophy Race. All these races have added prizes of P25,000 to the winner. The race honorees have all contributed to the success of the WBC. Atty. Salud and Atty. Reverente used to be connected with MJC and, with Pres. Sulaiman, were among the founding members of the WBC decades ago.
On Sunday, MJC will also play host to the nearly 600 international convention delegates and guests who will be on hand to witness the races. ***
