Contrary to rumor, betting station tellers will not be staging a strike tonight, the first night of this week’s races at the Manila Jockey Club’s San Lazaro Leisure Park in Carmona, Cavite.
In a telephone interview with a teller who is also an officer of the MJC Raceday Employees’ Union, she said that the tellers are disputing the reduction of their wages and the proposed personnel redundancy which will cut 140 tellers from the roster.
Though the union has filed a Notice of Strike with the National Conciliation and Mediation Board, they will not be implementing the strike pending a hearing scheduled tomorrow at the NCMB between the union and MJC management.
“It’s not only the tellers’ salaries that are affected,” said the teller in Tagalog. “All raceday employees are affected.” She claimed that two MJC raceweeks ago, tellers’ salaries for 10-race racing days were given in full. But last raceweek, although the number of races was the same, their compensation was cut.
